Food Friday: Goat Cheese
friday, september 03, 2010

A few weeks ago the Lovely Faith and I threw a baby shower for the Dazzling Suzannah and her wonderful husband where we ate and talked and ate and opened presents and ate some more. Faith got a red velvet cake from Carousel Cakes which is on Oprah's Favorite Things list and it was indeed favorable! Faith also went to Fairway to load up on goodies for the party including an amazing assortment of cheese. I had to tell myself several times to step away from the cheese, in particular a firm goat cheese from Cypress Grove Chevre called Midnight Moon. I love goat cheese but have only ever eaten the crumbly log type.
To put it mildly, I've become obsessed with this cheese.
I was able to find it at Whole Foods where it's $19.99 A POUND. Thankfully, Whole Foods sells it in tiny wedges and you really only need mere slivers to be satisfied. I've been eating it for dinner with a few water or wheat crackers and a salad. The tasting notes from the Cypress Grove web site call it "firm, dense and smooth with the slight graininess of a long-aged cheese. The flavor is nutty and brown-buttery, with prominent caramel notes" - that's pretty much all I can say too plus it's sealed in a beautiful black wax. Cypress Grove has some other delicious cheeses profiled on their site but for now I'll keep myself busy with Midnight Moon and try not to finish it off in one sitting (or while standing at the fridge).
